Panchakarma Therapy

images18

Ayurveda treatments have four basic forms of therapies, which are medicine or drug therapy, Panchakarma, ayurveda diets or nutritional therapies and rejuvenation therapies. In these basic forms, Panchakarma is the most important and effective therapy to rebuild the healthy lifestyle. Generally, Panchakarma therapies are done in a natural environment under the guidance of good and experienced ayurveda practitioners.

Panchakarma is an ancient form of therapy originated in India. The word panchakarma stands for five actions or techniques. It is a purifying or eliminating therapy to enhance the metabolism of the body and mind by these five actions. Generally panchakarma is done in two ways:

Treating the doshas (toxic materials) in the by natural herbs and medicines.
Eliminating the complete doshas from the body.

Unhealthy lifestyle, stress, strain and changes in climate are the main reasons for various toxins in the body. These toxins have to be removed from body in order to keep the well-being of the body. Ayurveda therapies, especially panchakarma can completely remove these toxins from the body and can keep it healthy and powerful.

The five types of treatments in Panchakarma therapy include:

Vamana Karma (use of emetics) – Vamana Karma is used for ‘Kapha’ disorders like Asthma, Cold, Bronchitis and sinus. It is a medicated therapy which removes Kapha toxins accumulated in the body and the respiratory tract.

Virechana (use of laxatives) – Virechana Karma is used to treat pitta disorders like Hyperacidity, skin disorders, Digestive disorders, ulcer, and Constipation
Basti Karma (medicated enema) – Promotes emission in the colon and thus ensures a good health. It is highly beneficial in cleansing and detoxifying the body.

Nasya Karma (Nasal administration) – Inhalation of herbal steams through the nose, which clears the nasal passages and lungs. It cures the diseases related to head, eyes, nose, etc.
Rakta Mokshana (blood-letting) – In this treatment impure blood from the body is removed by using surgical instruments. This will help to remove the toxins from the blood.

The duration of Panchakarma therapy is typically three to seven days. The physical and mental conditions of a person are considered before prescribing this therapy. Panchakarma is a vital Ayurvedic treatment thus it requires proper guidance and administration and it should not be advised to do with information from a book or article. Sometimes not everyone requires all five forms of panchakarma. So it is recommended that this therapy should undertake with proper observation and supervision by a trained ayurvedic practitioner.

The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage Therapy

In this article, you will learn about deep tissue massage therapy, the benefits of investing in such an activity, and whether you should consider this therapy.

Deep tissue massage therapy is a type of massage performed to release the restrictions found in deeper muscle and connective tissues. This therapy is recommended for people with chronic pain or those involved in intense physical activities. People who have regular physical injuries should also consider deep tissue massage therapy.

When muscles are contracted and remain so for a long period, they can become inflamed and constrict the oxygen flow around the body. The massage is performed mainly on the knots found on the body by applying pressure consistently on the targeted area until the knot disappears. Deep tissue massage therapy can be considered as corrective in this case.

Although great improvements can be noticed after one hour of massage, this is mainly a therapy. Deep tissue massage therapy needs to be performed on a regular basis in order to get rid of all the knots present. Experts recommend once per week and self-massages done in-between these sessions.

The reduced circulation of oxygen around the body can significantly impact overall health. This can also cause a buildup of toxins in the body, especially in the muscle area. The removal of the knots will lead to improved circulation of cerebraspinal fluids, lymph, blood, and intestinal fluids.

You need to remember that this is not a replacement for good posture, diet, relaxation, and exercise. Deep tissue massage therapy should be used in conjunction with good posture, diet, and relaxation and physical exercise for optimal results.

We have gone over what deep tissue massage therapy is and the benefits involved. You should consider this as part of leading a healthy lifestyle. As mentioned above, this is not a replacement for great daily habits. It can be corrective but the effects can fade after only one day.

Athletes have seen chronic pains coming back when relying only on deep tissue massage therapy as a corrective measure. Relaxation can deeply enhance its effects since most of the knots are caused by stress and blocked thoughts. If you lack the balance between mental and physical exertion, deep tissue massage therapy is a great choice for you.

OCD Cognitive Behaviour Therapy & Exposure Response Prevention

What CBT & ERP is and How They Are Used in Today’s Health Field to Treat OCD

CBT and ERP are two different treatment options available to treat OCD. CBT is short for cognitive behavioral therapy. This therapy is a talking therapy that aims to solve problems by focusing on identifying the thoughts, emotions and habits that lead to a person repeating the same pattern that leads to the problem.

ERP is short for exposure and response prevention. This is a treatment method that has the subject confronting their fears. It also identifies the thinking process and emotional patterns used that leads to the subject repeating a habit. It then attempts to get the person to respond differently to the way he or she used to respond by refraining from the previous behavior.

Both therapy methods are used to treat OCD. It all begins with cognitive behavior therapy. The therapist will talk to the patient. The focus will not be on the events of the past but rather more on the current problems. The goal here is to learn about the patient and even develop a relationship with the patient.

Trust is very important to the treatment process as patients need to have confidence and feel comfortable about the treatment process. After some trust has been established, the therapist will give the patient advice on how to think as well as suggestions on how to deal with their OCD.

An example is helping patients understand that they can make their own choices. Rather than submit to OCD, they can strengthen their ability to make a decision with beliefs such as “I washed my hands because of my anxiety.” This allows patients to see that they have options rather than succumbing to the thought process of something like “I have to wash my hands.”

The next step is the exposure and responsive prevention therapy. The patient will have to face their OCD over and over again. For example, if the patient has the compulsion to wash his hands repeatedly, he should just go ahead and do it. Over time, the patient will have to refrain from repeating the habit while being in the state of anxiety.

This process repeats so that the patient practices how to refrain from the compulsive habit. What this does is that it gives the patient confidence and practice in withholding from the habit. With the therapist’s help, the patient will be able to get rid of the anxiety that causes him to going through with the compulsive action.

So that is an overview on how cognitive behavior therapy and exposure and responsive prevention are used to treat OCD today. These two treatment options are proving to be effective and the success rate is quite high. These two treatments work best when they are used together. The exposure and responsive prevention therapy in particular really helps solidify positive habits and get rid of the anxiety that causes the obsessive and compulsive behavior.

Florida Medical Spas Regulators Look Beyond the Surface

images2

There is no such thing as a -medical spa- in Florida. True! They are not uniquely licensed. In fact, they are usually not licensed at all because (1) they are owned and operated by licensed healthcare professionals, and/or (2) they do not file claims for reimbursement with health insurers. And they are not a regulated entity.

What then is a -medical spa-? It’s simply a place where people receive traditional spa services (e.g. facials), plus many other medical procedures, typically focused on cosmetic services (e.g. hair removal, Botox). It’s -medical- because of the nature of the services provided. It’s -medical- because (ideally) physician supervision is woven into the business model.

The trickiest part of medical spas for owners/operators is ensuring just two things: (1) that the professionals providing the services are doing so in a manner that doesn’t violate their licenses, and (2) those professionals have proper physician supervision. Each licensed person who typically works in a med spa is bound by statutes and regulations that govern what they can do and the degree (if any) of physician supervision required. The -scope of practice- regs applicable to PAs are different that those which apply to NPs or MAs for instance. The level of physician supervision is dictated not only by the license of the supervised professional, but also what the professional is doing. Rest assured, however, that the belief that such -formal- things do not apply because the patients pay in cash is not only untrue, but also a recipe for being shut down and prosecuted.

Other big challenges for med spas tend to be-

?Fee splitting arising in connection with how the professionals are paid (especially when they are paid on a percentage of collections basis)

?The Florida Patient Self Referral Act, which in part may limit to 50% the amount of physician ownership if the physician is in a position to refer to the med spa.

Regulatory scrutiny can be expected to increase in coming years, especially as the media shines light on client injuries (typically burns from laser services) and the scope of services expands to include things like hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which traditionally involves telemedicine related issues. Med spa owners would do well to take seriously the many intricate (and disconnected) regs applicable to the licensed professionals who work in med spas and the physicians who supervise them.

Solomon Neuhardt on Discipline in Medical Malpractrice

Medical malpractice is an act of professional negligence committed by a doctor or other health care provider. In most cases, it involves a course of treatment that falls below an accepted standard of care for a particular illness or ailment. The worst cases involve severe or life threatening injury, or even death.

Regulations and standards for medical malpractice cases can vary according to country and jurisdiction. For this reason, Solomon Neuhardt recommends a disciplined attorney to handle the very complex legal issues connected with legal claims arising from medical error.

Errors that cause medical malpractice can begin from very simple omissions or infractions, which result in a variety of unfortunate situations for patients. For example, permanent injuries or further damage to an already unpleasant and painful medical complaint. Most all of these errors could have been prevented, with properly administered and mindful care.

Because professionals obtain liability insurance to offset lawsuit costs and risks, patients may be more likely to be victorious in medical claims. However, when it comes to medical malpractice, the legal system can be a very complicated process to navigate. Solomon Neuhardt believes that only highly disciplined lawyers are able to effectively manage and litigate medical malpractice cases.

The costs of health care in the U.S. continue to rise, however, the quality of medical services available does not match those rising costs. Statistics have shown that approximately 195,000 people die annually in the U.S., due to medical errors. Approximately 73 percent of malpractice claims that are settled, involve medical errors.

Doctors, health care providers and their insurance companies have the best legal representation available. Only a highly qualified medical malpractice personal injury attorney can level the playing field and ensure that injured patients will receive the care and compensation they are entitled to and deserve. This is why patients need Solomon Neuhardt’s highly disciplined and qualified medical malpractice specialists and lawyers to handle their claims and lawsuits.

Manual Therapy For The Treatment Of Temporomandibular Disorder New Research

images15

You notice some pain in your jaw when chewing, which progressively worsens over several weeks. Occasionally you feel a clicking or catching in your jaw when opening and closing your mouth. Eventually you are unable to fully open your mouth and experience pain even when you speak. If you have never experienced this, count yourself very lucky. If you have, you are already familiar with the relatively common condition known as TMD.

TMD, short for temperomandibular disorder, is estimated to affect as much as 40% of the population at some point in their lifetimes, and is especially prevalent in the young. Initial diagnosis is typically made through a visit to the dentist, and the eventual treatment multidisciplinary with various management techniques. One of the lesser known treatment techniques, but something that is gaining in popularity, is soft-tissue therapy of the masticatory muscles the muscles used to move the jaw.

As a sports chiropractor using manual soft-tissue therapy on a daily basis, I have treated TMD on many occasions with success, however good research on the subject has been lacking. Recently however, this type of myofascial therapy for TMD was tested for efficacy in a randomized, controlled clinical trial. Researchers from Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia examined the clinical effectiveness of manual therapy in the treatment TMD. Specifically, they compared myofascial therapy to myofascial therapy plus self-care and education and no care (the control group in the study).

This was a private clinic-based study, with eligible participants ranging from age 18-50 presenting with jaw pain with or without joint sounds of at least 3 months and a willingness to participate in the study. Patients with physical or psychological contraindications were excluded. The outcome measures were jaw pain at rest, jaw pain upon maximal active opening, and jaw pain upon clenching.

The primary therapy consisted of myofascial release of the masticatory muscles, including the temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoid, and masseter. The subjects were treated twice per week over a period of 6 weeks for a total of 12 therapy sessions. Additionally, one group was given additional education and self-care consisting of self-mobilization, exercises and stretching, as well as general education on TML anatomy, biomechanics, disc displacement and dysfunction, and the role of psychoemotional factors contributing to TMD.

The results showed a statistically significant positive efficacy for both the myofascial therapy only, and the myofascial therapy plus education and self-care groups. Not surprisingly, the therapy plus self-care group showed a better 1 year outcome than the therapy alone group a trend that has been supported for the care of most musculoskeletal conditions.

Although the results of this study are no surprise to those practicing manual therapy, it serves to reinforce what we already know anecdotally. For patients suffering from TMD there is now evidence for another great intervention, and for manual therapists not currently treating TMD, there is a great opportunity to expand your skillset and serve those in need.

The Benefits Of Massage Therapy Are Numerous

images7

In need of a day off to spend recuperating and relaxing from a stressful week? Many people would opt to make an appointment at a spa or with a masseuse to enjoy some feel-good alone time. That type of person will be pleased to know, then, that this sort of day is actually recommended by the doctor! Massage therapy is great for the mind and even better for the body — check out all the ways your physical health can benefit from a trip to the masseuse.

Those with poor posture can surely reap the benefits of getting a massage. Hunched or slouching postures can, over time, lead to many other complications, so if it is severe, it should be corrected. Most of the recommendations for training the body to stand up straight involve doing core workouts and learning proper balance. While those take time, practice, and patience, going to a masseuse is actually an enjoyable way to benefit the spine.

If you visit with a trained therapist regularly, it is true that your heart will be grateful. Regular therapy sessions promote circulation to areas of the body that are not typically the focal point. In turn, patients will notice that the body simply functions better. Additionally, the improved circulation can lead to a lowering of blood pressure, which helps to combat symptoms of depression, potential for heart attacks, and hormonal imbalances.

Everyone knows the woes of sitting in a desk chair all day long: the neck and shoulders surely suffer. This can put a person in a bad mood, make it difficult to sleep, and lead to other aches as a result of all the unnecessary tension. These types of strains and any other knots can quickly and effectively be kneaded out. In addition, regular massages will encourage flexibility in the muscles, preventing such stiffness and injury from occurring in the future.

Tension headaches are the result of straining in the muscles of the shoulders, back, and neck. When the muscles in these areas are overworked, the brain certainly feels it. This tension can be quickly relieved by a nice massage, and therefore, headaches like these will be cured and become less frequent. All this can be attributed to the sense of relaxation induced by massage as well as the promotion of healthy blood flow.

So, while it may feel like you are splurging or indulging by seeking out massage therapy, the truth is you are helping your body to reap some long-term benefits. Massages can be an instant cure for certain ailments, such as strained muscles or feelings of stress. However, they are also great for promoting flexibility — and therefore, avoiding injury — in the long term, and can even treat and help to prevent minor forms of depression.

Ipl Acne Therapy Treatment

images1

IPL uses a more sophisticated type of technology that involves a xenon flash lamp and optical prisms. This method targets the damaged cells that lie deeper within the skin and avoids irritation of the surrounding tissues. A technician begins by placing cold gel on the affected area and then positions the lamp above the surface of your skin. This lamp will send light pulses to the skin. The IPL process usually lasts 15-20 minutes and depending on the level of achievement you’re looking for, can require one or multiple sessions. There are some side effects, as with all treatments, that you should be made aware of. IPL sessions can cause light bruising, mild blistering, pink skin and even hair loss.
How does IPL work for acne?

There are three forms of IPL therapy for acne – LHE Therapy, Blue-Light Therapy and IPL with medication. The choice will depend on what results you’re looking for and what your dermatologist suggests as the most effective for your individual acne spots.

LHE therapy uses both heat and light as the source to treat acne. The FDA has actually approved one IPL treatment that involves green light waves and heat. This form of IPL is meant to treat mild to moderate acne and more than likely, over a period of time. The whole process has been known to reduce the size of oil glands and kill the dirt bacteria in pores that create acne.

Blue-Light therapy is similar to LHE minus the UV radiation. It only makes sense that less UV radiation equals less damage on your skin. This form of IPL will have the same effect on killing the dirt bacteria but with less side effects than the LHE therapy. According to Robin McClain, who is a registered nurse practitioner from the University of South Florida, has reported that this form of light therapy is best used for acne vulgaris. As with all other treatments, blue-light therapy does have side effects such as dry skin and/or temporary pigmentation change. A process of eight sessions over a 4 week time period should be allowed for visible results.

Lastly, we have IPL therapy with a mixture of medication. (Again, we stress that you should consult with your dermatologist in order to make an educated decision on IPL.) The medication that is involved in this process is activated by way of pulsed light. A few hours prior to the process ALA (the medication) is applied to your skin and a numbing agent will also be used to reduce pain and/or a stinging sensation during the process. The numbing agent is typically applied an hour and a half prior to the treatment. The actual treatment is concluded in 20-30 minutes. Side effects are possible and involve slight bruising and pink skin. The recovery time usually lasts no longer than one day.

Oculoplastic Surgery Is a Revolution in Medical Science

images11

Oculoplastic Surgery is a sub speciality of Ophthalmology that deals with abnormalities and deformities of all the tissues that surround the eyes. This surgery is directly related with plastic surgery as it works to improve the aesthetic value of the eye and part of the face. The Oculoplastic surgeons must complete an advanced training in plastic surgery after completion of their degree in Ophthalmology. Oculoplastic surgery is also used to treat medical conditions. The area around the eye is extremely sensitive and complex. Oculoplastic surgeons perform the job of correcting medical and aesthetic deformities in this region with their extensive knowledge and experience.

The medical reasons for Oculoplastic surgery commonly include cysts on the eyelids or tumours on the eyelids. Vision obstruction such as drooping eyelids can also be corrected through this surgery. Watering eyes, dry eyes, Thyroid eye disease and Blepharospasm are other medical reasons for performing this highly specialized surgery. The aesthetic reasons of the surgery include correcting the baggy lower eyelids, toning the over-hanging upper eyelids, lifting the eye brows, increasing facial volume as well as removing the periorbital wrinkles. In every case, the process is complex and needs an expert to perform this eye surgery.

Lacrimal surgery is a specialized type of oculoplastic surgery performed on the tear glands of children suffering from congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction or some other condition that causes watery eyes. This surgery can be performed on adults, as well. Depending on the cause, this surgery might be medium to minimally invasive. The time of recovery depends on the type and the extent of the surgery. In most cases, patients are released just after the operation is performed. However, before deciding on Oculoplastic Surgery, it is essential to choose the best eye surgeon and eye surgical center with care, to get the best treatment in every respect. You can always check the website of the eye surgeons for details.
